Overview

Andrew Gifford is internationally recognised for his innovative paintings and light installations based on the landscape. His work has been widely exhibited, including solo public shows at Leeds City Art Gallery (2004), Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh (2001) and Middlesbrough Art Gallery (2000). In 2014 his exhibition Two Cities: Paintings of Jerusalem and Ramallah toured with the British Council to Al-Ma’mal Foundation, Jerusalem and the A. M. Qattan Foundation in Ramallah.  Also in 2014 an exhibition, ‘Cities of the Northeast’ was shown at the University of Northumbria and in 2016 his exhibition ‘New York Paintings’ was exhibited in New York at the Spring Masters in the Armory building.  Other exhibitions have taken place in Hong Kong, Singapore and Houston.

Over the last three years, the artist has been immersed himself in the landscapes & woodlands of Sussex and Yorkshire. Choosing to paint unassuming, almost incidental subjects, Andrew Gifford focuses in on the complexity of lichen clad trees, the quality lof ight falling on the woodland floor and so on, building up dense, keenly observed canvases.

‘The composition, like many of the tree paintings I have made over the last two years, is intentionally uncomposed, in an attempt to give the viewer the feeling of an incidental view, echoing the way you observe nature when surrounded by it. In my painting, which begins with small studies made outside in all weathers,  I am trying to show that there is  soul and beauty everywhere you look and to encourage you to stop and look harder.’

Biography

“Painting is an attempt to show the power of these ancient trees. The bark is covered in scales that reflect a myriad of colours, it involves such a build up of colours that it has been quite mentally exhausting to paint. The boughs of the tree have such warmth of colour that they seem to glow with light.”
