Louise Longstaff
Biography
Longstaff-Scales’ practice is largely autobiographical, drawing on personal narratives and storytelling within the context of landscape. Her paintings explore how meaning is formed through place, memory, and the ancient cycles of the natural world. Some works respond to specific locations and moments, while others build composite landscapes—layered impressions that trace journeys across both land and memory.
Her work reflects on themessuch as the passage of time, human behaviour, and states of consciousness, often positioning the landscape as both setting and companion. Through this lens, she considers how environments shift and endure, and how individuals find continuity within change.
Longstaff-Scales approaches painting as an exploratory and reflective process, where making is inseparable from meaning. Her works embrace fluidity and impermanence, seeking moments of recognition while gently moving beyond the familiar. Titles and compositions often take on a poetic quality, echoing fleeting observations and personal responses to the vastness of the natural world.
