    A 2021 Wimbledon College of Art graduate, Appleby has this Summer, completed his MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, while rapidly establishing an international exhibition profile across London, Europe and Asia.

     
    Appleby’s acrylic paintings use the landscape as a microcosm through which to explore broader themes of existence, memory, technology and environmental fragility. His works occupy a space where chaos and order collide, constructing worlds that are simultaneously comforting and unsettling.

    Drawing on deceptively decorative imagery, Appleby creates paintings that feel familiar and accessible while subtly engaging with darker and more complex ideas. Many of his landscapes possess a post apocalyptic quality, presenting environments that appear beautiful yet uncertain, inviting viewers to reflect on humanity’s place within a changing world. 
     
    Recurring motifs act as symbolic anchors throughout the work. The sun serves as a reminder of our smallness within the vastness of existence, while plants represent the fragility and resilience of the natural ecosystem. The graphic, flattened qualities of the paintings reference the digital world and the visual language of screens that increasingly mediate our experience of reality. Windows appear as both physical and symbolic devices, functioning as screens behind which we sit as observers, watching the world unfold at a distance. 
     
    Appleby seeks to create paintings that feel ethereal and celestial, balancing wonder with unease. Central to his practice is an interest in time. He believes that the most powerful paintings are not simply about describing space, but about evoking the passage of time, memory and change. 
     
    Autobiographical references are woven throughout the work, helping to construct each painting’s narrative and emotional atmosphere. Through this combination of personal experience, symbolic imagery and imagined landscapes, Appleby creates spaces that invite contemplation of both the intimate and the universal.
