The piece was painted in a narrow belt of woodland where I grew up in Wiltshire. I was drawn to return here, a place of familiarity and love, but it was the heatwave that really narrowed my painting spot down. I needed the cool of the trees. Here I could explore the rhythms and connections between trees and the feel of the cool against the enticing/ threatening heat beyond.
