Rock Park first became a familiar place to us during lockdown. New to the town of Barnstaple, Rock park formed part of our regular permitted exercise walks, and has remained a favourite spot since. The nearest public land to our small house, this estuary-side open space more usually fulfils a need to see the state of the tide in the river Taw, but this day, 24th May, on an unusually early morning walk, the opposite direction called for attention. Sunrise burning through the early river mist with trees reduced to misty silhouettes. Very much a place of human intervention, from the saplings and theirs sticks in the foreground, through the goalposts on the field and onto the school floodlights beyond, yet transfigured in the moment to a mystical wonder.
