Newlyn harbour is a working harbour – more gritty than other fishing villages and is a chaotic jumble of haulers, cranes and industrial kit. I love the visual chaos of it - the ever-changing arrangement of forms and bright, clashing colours.

On this evening in May the sun made the harbour glow an orangey-pink, lit up like a theatre set with the golden light catching the boats and Penzance behind.

I paint using impasto oils and a palette knife, carving out forms until the painting feels solid. En plein air, something of the essence of the day seems to get caught up in the paint so when I look at it I can feel the unseasonably balmy May air, the sounds of the harbour and the smell of the sea.
