The Orford Ness shingle spit on the Suffolk Coast is a strange and highly evocative landscape – vast, open and isolating. It is impossible to ignore, and not be drawn to, the structures of the former Atomic Weapons Research Establishment that interrupt the flatness. Their slowly decaying angular forms are incongruous and otherworldly – science-fact creating a science-fiction atmosphere. They stand as a stark reminder of the Cold War within the peace and tranquillity of the nature reserve that now surrounds them. My piece takes an abstracted view along the Ness from one of the iconic vibration testing pagoda structures.
