The church, St Bartholomew, is actually in the valley but I put it half way up the fell I was climbing, which was Hen Comb. The water in the distance is Crummock Water. My partner Andy and I only have four of the Wainwrights to complete after more than fifteen years of fell walking. On one level the painting is about what shapes us. I didn’t want to paint a particularly remarkable fell or church, but something that could be read more generally, as part of what forms us through the land we live in and the histories that come with it and the sense of belonging they produce.
