This painting was inspired by an incredible trip in May on a little boat out to this uninhabited island off the West coast of County Kerry, Ireland - the Great Blasket Island. We were lucky that the weather and sea conditions were good enough for the boat to run while we were there. We visited the Great Blasket Island more than ten years ago, and have tried a few times since but the weather hasn’t been good enough.
There is an abandoned village of houses on the island, where people lived until the 1950s.
The water was a gorgeous colour when we visited this time, and the light was beautiful, there’s a magical glow about the island.
