I’m a Sheffield based artist but try to visit the Golden Lane Estate whenever I’m in London. It’s a site I’ve been exploring since 2017, when I visited with a friend who knew a resident there. The estate is sited right in the heart of the city and has an incredibly strong sense of community. I find it very aesthetically pleasing, with myriads of different angles, spaces within spaces and bright colours.
For the past 15 years, my practice has focussed on the built environment, particularly social housing estates and Brutalist architecture, seeking to find beauty, visual interest and to celebrate the ordinary.
Earlier this year, I spent a few hours at the Golden Lane, taking photographs and making quick sketches in situ, images I used to make this painting.
