I take a weekly art lesson with a special needs child in East Farndon. On the way home off a country lane I have discovered a tiny footpath leading to the top of a hilltop with a magnificent view. My work is about panorama and the finer details that go to make it up, in addition I love using colour to create composition. Here were layers of colour melting into the sky with a golden field of rapeseed glowing in the last light of the day. I managed to make a quick noted sketch. I remember colour well and rushed back to the studio spontaneously painting the scene; the space between observation and recollection which characterises my artwork. My father used to take us for Saturday walks up the Surrey Hills and say “LOOK AT THAT VIEW”. I have become just like him, and like Hockney I want people to look. To view the landscape as an experience. In places like this I find peace and I hope that sense of peace in a troubled world comes across here.
