This drawing was created directly in the landscape, positioned where a dense woodland gives way to the open parkland of Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. The work explores the threshold between the sheltered interior of the woods and the expansive land beyond. The focus of the study is an oak tree, standing resiliently in the open field under the spring sky. It was a hot day in May and I could hear thunder around me as I worked. I wanted to draw attention to the transient nature of the environment and the swiftly moving clouds above, capturing the charged atmosphere of the earth and sky, with the tree representing the enduring character of this ancient estate.
