Middlesex Filter Beds were built by the East London Water Works Company in the mid 1800’s and demonstrates how previously industrial areas can become valuable habitats for wildlife. Originally built as a response to the cholera outbreak they operated for over a century until its closure in 1969.
Over the last 2 years, the filter beds have been restored as a wetland habitat to return the nature reserve to its former glory. Today, the site functions as a rich, rehabilitated nature reserve that serves as a unique sanctuary for local biodiversity.
