Heavy clouds gather overhead while shafts of light break through, illuminating the peaty pools scattered across the ground. These fleeting reflections reveal the constant interplay between weather, light and land that defines this place. Rooted in direct experience, the painting is created later in the studio from memory, drawing on the feelings, sensations and atmosphere of the landscape rather than attempting a literal representation. Rich textures and layered surfaces echo the saturated earth beneath our feet. It also reflects the ever-changing light and fast-moving weather at the end of a day in May, when storm, shadow and brightness can coexist in a single moment.
