Uwe Walther’s exhibition presents a new body of work in which views of the Alps emerge directly from the maps they depict. Painting onto original Swisstopo sheets, Walther uses the existing grid lines, contour markings, and graphic structures of cartography as the framework around which his fictional landscapes appear. Rooted in a lifelong engagement with maps, and shaped by his experience of cartography in the former GDR, Uwe Walther’s work explores the act of map reading as a creative process. Seventeen paintings are based on the maps locating some of the legendary mountain refuges run by the Swiss Alpine Club, depicting fictional landscapes above the tree line where human traces and wilderness intersect.
