Makiko Nakamura : at Art Dubai

 Makiko Nakamura has followed the same studio practice for decades. Working alone, she builds each painting slowly over months, with repeating layers of grids, circles and fields of colour, which when dry, are then worked backwards through the layers creating a visible surface that becomes a record of time passing. In recent works, these forms appear suspended rather than fixed. Titles drawn from constellations and distant nebulae suggest a world released from gravity. Now, at seventy-five, Nakamura’s work continues with quiet assurance; disciplined, meditative, and patient, yet through these constraints her work finds its way to a sense of freedom and spontaneity.
