'Kyoto is an extraordinary gift to a painter of gardens, although access can be challenging: many are sacred places governed by strict rules. The Japanese garden seems to bend nature almost to breaking point. Despite their philosophical serenity, these spaces are as carefully structured as interiors—which, intellectually and spiritually, is perhaps what they are.'

'A large pond sits low beneath a canopy of mature trees, surrounded by a vast green carpet of moss. The luminous greens and blacks, small bridges and paths, mirrored pools and ever-present rocks create an intensely romantic atmosphere.
During the final week, I painted in Nara, including at Hase-dera, before returning to Hakone and Mount Fuji, and finishing in Yokohama with another suitcase full of paintings.' -
