Francis Hamel, Two Seasons in Japan

Francis Hamel’s next exhibition is the result of two extensive journeys through Japan: first in the autumn of 2025 and again in the spring of 2026. The resulting sixty paintings range from the celebrated gardens and temples of Kyoto and Kanazawa to mountain forests, rivers, farms, city streets and the remote landscapes of northern Honshu and Shikoku. Hamel brings a deep sensitivity to atmosphere and light, and to the emotional resonance found in gardens. Across two contrasting seasons, he explores the compelling dialogue between the composed artistry of the Japanese garden and the natural landscape from which it draws.
